Tyler Norton

Some people are gifted speakers.  The kind that no matter how many times you hear them speak…..even if they are speaking on the same topic….. you still learn something and enjoy it.  This is the case of Tyler Norton.   I hope he won’t mind me singing his praises tonight.

I have had the opportunity to hear Tyler speak several times now.  I didn’t know much about him when I first met him.  I knew that he had a very successful career in the Insurance industry and was in high demand as a trainer and speaker.  I also knew that he was the son of the CEO of the company we have chosen to hang our hat with.  But that’s really all I knew.  Then we heard him speak.  He is very compelling and such a good teacher.  He speaks from the heart and loves to use his ‘white board’ to explain his beliefs and strategies.  I actually really like this aspect, because making it ‘visual’ to the people you are teaching helps to drive home your point.  He is very careful about making sure that you are ‘tracking’ with him before he moves on.

One of the great things that he teaches in our trainings is this: The OUTCOME is to BECOME and then the INCOME will follow.  I really love and appreciate this idea.  The definition of ‘becoming’ at dictionary.com, when used as a noun, is as follows:  any process of change… or…. any change involving realization of potentialities, as a movement from the lower level of potentiality to the higher level of actuality.  Isn’t ‘becoming’ what we should all be doing everyday?  The process of change or of learning, becoming better than we were.  Allowing ourselves to discover our true potentiality and loving and respecting others for theirs.

Let’s look at the definition of outcome for a minute.  Dictionary.com defines it as a noun as follows:  a final product or end result; consequence; issue….. or…..a conclusion reached through a process of logical thinking.   So to further expound on Tyler’s training motto mentioned above…..  By being more concerned about what we are like as a person….. by looking at the ‘bigger picture’……  the outcome is that we will become better.  Better at how we talk to people, better at being concerned about them as people and what their needs are and not as concerned about ourselves.  In showing them that we care about them, we build a relationship of trust which will ultimately affect what our income will be.

I am working on becoming so that I will be better at my work and as a person.  I am so grateful to be connected with such an amazing company!  Thanks for all your brilliance, Tyler!!

I am Grateful!  How are you?

Enthusiatic People

Enthusiasm seems to rub off on people… at least most people.  I suppose there are always one or two people in the crowd that can look at an enthusiastic person and just be annoyed.  I would say that reaction falls under Attitude…. which I’ll save to blog about on another day!

The other night I met an extremely enthusiastic person.  John and I had gone to a class given by a Doctor that practices Natural medicine.  This person was in attendance at that class.  Have you ever noticed that some people are just more vocal during a teaching situation that others are?  You could see that she was a really ‘bubbly’ person during the class.  She would ask questions and then nod her head and vocalize in agreement when the doctor said something that she agreed with that was new information to her.  After the class was over….. we hung around for a few minutes because I had a question to ask the Doc.  In the course of hanging around…. somehow the topic of weight was brought up and I made a comment about how I have heard that maybe the reason I struggle with keeping weight off is because for some reason I ‘can’t let it go’…. that it’s a ‘mental’ hang up I have.  Then… I was told that this lady is a Personal Coach and was great at helping people get beyond those kinds of issues.

She started talking to me….. with her very enthusiastic personality….. and actually was giving me a short little coaching lesson in what I needed to do to release those negative feelings about myself.  It was really quite delightful to watch her as she demonstrated a few things for me.  She is truly full of energy and vibrancy and it was hard not to feel that being around her.  She just ‘exudes’ with enthusiasm.  I can see how she would be a great coach and I’m tempted to work with her because of it!  I think it’s what makes her a successful coach.

One of the sayings I remember learning from my speech class in high school is by Ralph Waldo Emerson:  “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”    It really is true!  Think about people who achieve great things…… aren’t they usually really excited or enthusiastic about something?  Isn’t that what gives them the drive to stick with it?  It’s much more interesting and fun to learn something from someone when you know they are passionate about it and teach it with joy and excitement.  Those are the kinds of teachers that kept me awake in school!  Not the boring ones who seemed hum drum and not very interested in what they were teaching!!  Another saying goes like this:  “Enthusiasm ignites greatness”  So let’s all get ignited and stay enthusiastic about life!  Find your passion and live it!  Share it!  Be it!

Michael Buble

Smooth.  Cool.  Tasteful.  Suave.  Easy Listening.  Flowing.  Seamless.  Silky.  Velvet.  Need I go on?  This is only a few things that describe Michael Buble!  OH…… don’t forget….. yummy!

I’ve never been a fan of heavy metal music and it always had to be pretty easy listening rock and roll for me to enjoy it.  Perhaps because I was raised by parents who grew up in the 40’s when all those great jazz standards were around and I heard them a lot because that’s what my Mom played on the radio.  Can’t say I hated them by any stretch of the word.  I’m sure I had my days of wishing I could hear my own music instead of hers……but I learned to love all those great standards too.

Standards is pretty much what Michael Buble does…. with a mix of remakes from later years too…. along with some great original stuff…..but pretty much the old jazz standard style with his own flare and touch.  Great stuff.  I’ve always wanted to record my own album of jazz standards….  long before all these darn ‘kids’ started recording this stuff!   And someday I’m going to…. but in the meantime…. I’ll just relish on their talents!

Michael Buble has the kind of voice that I could listen to all day.  It’s not a voice that grates on your ears….. it doesn’t wear on you.  A great easy listening voice.  He’s been touted as having a vocal style similar to Frank Sinatra…. but I personally think it’s better!!  I do love crooners though.  Slick, sexy, romantic.  Yep….  give me a good crooner any day!!

Thanks for bringing joy into my life Michael!!

Facing Fear

We all have fears to face.  Some more than others…..but we really could be facing some kind of fear on a daily basis.  I’m not talking about the kind of fear of going to a spoke alley or something…. (which, by the way, I don’t like doing…..)  but more like fears of being rejected or of failure.

I once heard it said that all emotions or actions are based on love or fear.   I believe that it’s true.  It’s easy to forget sometimes that that might be the case….. as we get wrapped up in our daily lives…… but if we really analyze everything we do, it could be attributed to Fear or Love.   It’s hard to imagine being grateful for fear….. but what can we really learn from it?

In my current business, I work in the ‘fear zone’ every day.  There are all sorts of names I could attach to the fears I feel everyday…. but I’m learning that as I work through them, that they aren’t as bad as I ‘feared’ they’d be.  I’m also learning that by detaching myself from that fear and really realizing what I am doing, that I can truly come from a place of love, not fear.  It takes believing in myself and the things that I have to offer to get to that place….  but I am slowly learning.  Even with a strong belief in what I’m doing, I can still allow myself to let those fears creep in, and then what happens?  I don’t get the things accomplished that I should have and by so doing, I’m not helping people the way I could have!

I’m sure you’ve all heard the famous quote by Marianne Wiilliamson:  “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It’s our light not our darkness that most frightens us.”  Though that’s not the quote in it’s entirety…. it gets the message across that sometimes we are afraid of what we could really become.  We wonder if we are ready for it.  But by not sharing all that is in us….. we are not helping others around us.  The last part of the above quote says:  “As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”   Another famous quote on fear is from President F.D. Roosevelt:  “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself!”

Transforming fear to come from a place of love is a process.  It takes time, encouragement and an awareness of our feelings.  I know by putting in the following quote it will make this post a long one….but I think it’s worthy of reading.  It can help us to recognize what we are really feeling and try to move all emotions and actions toward love.

So…. I’m sitting here next to my dear sweet husband while he is playing with the Ipad (we just decided that was our anniversary present to each other since we just got it the other day….)  We’re sitting here on our 32nd Anniversary and I’m thinking that I’m very grateful for Anniversaries!  Especially mine today!

Not that gift giving is a big thing at our house….  (Much to my children’s dismay)….I believe I talked about that in another blog…. but gifts don’t seem to make or break special days for us.  We know we love each other regardless.  In fact, earlier today we were talking about that.  I said to him….. “You know, when we have a bizillion dollars….( I say when because I’m working and planning on that!  (Did you hear that Universe????))…. I’m not even sure what I would get you for a gift!  I mean….. when money is not an issue…. don’t you just buy things as you need them?”  I guess his ’59 Corvette that he wants to buy and rebuild would count for a pretty spectacular gift….. or taking me on a pretty cool tropical vacation might count too……  maybe a lot!  Maybe it’s just that we’ve gotten so used to not making a big deal out it, we’ve forgotten what to do!!

Gifts or no gifts…. I’m grateful for my Anniversary today!  It gives me a chance to reflect back on our years together and remember our wedding day.  There are a lot of wonderful memories there!  I truly couldn’t ask for a better man for me!  I love spending time with him and I always have!  My favorite time of year during his working years was June, July and August because he was a teacher and I got to have him home for those 3 months! I know a lot of people don’t quite know what to do with their husbands when they retire….. but I didn’t have any trouble adjusting at all.  (Honey Dew…. honey dew….. jk… sort of!)

Today we celebrated by starting our day off volunteering in the temple.  We always refer to it as ‘working’ in the temple….but we really are volunteers because we don’t get paid anything!  At least not temporally!  What better way to start off the day since that’s the way we started our day 32 years ago!!   Then my daughter suggested we go to lunch at Cheesecake Factory since she was working and could take care of us….. so we did!  (Helps when your kids work there and the manager spots your appetizer and desert!!)   Since then we’ve enjoyed some quality time home together (including naps from our early morning schedule)… and are in the process of deciding what to do this evening……  work or pleasure?  What do you think?

Happy Anniversary Baby!!  I love you more than words can say!

I am Grateful!  How are you?

Busy Days

Today has been kind of a crazy busy day.  At this point in my life…. I don’t seem to have a lot of days like that.  The fact that I’m not a Grandma yet probably makes a difference.  I’m sure all of you out there that are Grandparents know what I’m talking about.  I’ve heard it said that most people are busier as Grandparents than they ever were as parents!

That’s not my lot in life right now.  Someday…. I’m sure it will be.  I’m not retired.  Kind of hard to retire from a job you’ve never had!!  I’ve been pretty blessed my whole life that I didn’t have to work outside the home.  While I did have a few part time jobs on occasion…. it wasn’t something I had to do.  So I’ve never really considered myself ‘retired’.  But, I do currently have a new home based business that is keeping me busy.  Busy at my own pace…. which I love.  I love what I am doing and love helping other peoples lives be better.

Today was full of ‘business’ things.  I usually am able to spend a fair amount of time on the computer on most days…. but not today.  Preparing for a meeting took up a good portion of my time this morning and then of course…… there was the meeting!  Which went very well.  I was very pleased with the results.  Then we had to go rush to redeem a Groupon Coupon before it expired….. (actually…. they extended the expiration date by 28 days…. which is a good thing… cause I would have missed it and then been really mad!)  Sometimes you just get so busy with important things that you forget about ‘trivial’ things like Groupons!!  After that…. I had a few minutes to catch up on my computer…. then a couple of friends dropped by and we had a little dinner and worked a little more on business things.  Finally, we got a visit from our High Priest Group Leader and one of his Assistants.

That probably doesn’t sound like a real busy day to some of you…… but in comparison to the average day for me right now….. it was full….. but it was all fun!  Busy days make the day go by quickly….. which can be good or bad, depending on whether you feel like you got something accomplished or not or are looking forward to an event in the future.  Today much was accomplished….and it was all good!  Makes for a great ending to a great day!

I am Grateful!  How are you?

Disney Cartoons

I took the opportunity over the weekend to watch “Tangled”.   I’d never seen it before…. so I was excited to see it because of everything I had heard about it.  And can I just say….. OH- MY- GOSH!  Soooo dang cute!  Who would have ever thought to add all that cleverness to a story about Rapunzel!!

The funny part is….  if you read the original Grimms Fairy Tale…. it doesn’t resemble the story line of ‘Tangled” much at all!   But, I’m OK with that…. cause I like this story line better!  It’s much more entertaining!  Actually….. I think if you look closely at several of the Fairy Tales that Disney has made into movies, you will find a lot of artistic license used to enhance the story line….. but they always seem to make it more endearing!

Disney has made some wonderful classic cartoons over the years.  In my day, as a youngster,  it was the likes of Snow White or Sleeping Beauty or even Dumbo the Elephant…. (which were mostly classics from before I was born….)  all of which are wonderful classics that I still love…. but turning that animation into a musical adaption is what really brought Disney to the forefront… in my opinion.  I believe those types of Disney cartoons started with my kids generation.  And they are some of my favorites…..like Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, just to mention few!  And they just keep coming out with more for this new generation…. like Tangled, The Princess and The Frog and of course the beloved Toy Story series.  That’ s just a beginning!  If you are curious about a comprehensive list of Disney Cartoons…. check out this website:  http://www.thecompletistgeek.com/

The style of animation has changed over the years too.  I think the earlier Disney cartoons tried to make the characters look more ‘realistic’….. while the new style seems to be to over exaggerate the features of the characters….. like the eyes!  Have you noticed how big the eyes are in the last few cartoons…like Tangled?  I like it though. After all…. it’s a fictional character, so why not over exaggerate!

Disney has added some wonderful entertainment in our lives over the years.  While this blog is about the cartoons….. there are plenty of regular Disney movies that I love too!  But we’ll save that for another day!!

Primary Songs

When I was a kid…. my Mom was the Primary Chorister in my Ward.  I grew up knowing all the Primary songs very well.  In fact…. I used to play Primary Chorister at home.   I loved to pull out all of her visual aids and line up all my dolls and pretend they were the Primary kids.  So of course, when I got called to be the Primary Chorister when my kids were little…. I was pretty excited.  Little did I know how much work it really was!

The music for Primary has changed a little over the years.  Some of the old standards area still there….. though they aren’t sung as often.  I really enjoy a lot of the newer Primary songs….. songs that would be considered standard today.   But it seems that every few years the Primary introduces a new song to the kids…. one that is not in the Children’s Songbook.  One such song is the song the Mo Tabs sang in the Saturday morning session of conference called “I Know My Savior Loves Me”.  Another one of my favorite newer Primary songs is “If The Savior Stood Beside Me”.  The message of both songs is so beautiful and the melodies are so memorable and easy to sing.  A song can teach and instill a message in a child like nothing else can.  And it’s a life long memory of recall.

The website Life123.com says this about teaching music to children:   “There are many benefits that come from teaching music to children. Listening to music involves multiple parts of the brain. Music is a language with symbols, sounds, vocabulary, grammar and inflection in its communication. The simple act of hearing a rhythm stimulates the brain on both the left and right sides. Hearing and learning to play music helps the brain develop the potential to learn more effectively on a number of levels.”

Involving more parts of the brain is probably what makes music ‘stick’!  And I love the fact that Primary music is ‘stuck’ in my head!  Many times recalling that music can be uplifting and make me feel better.  One of my favorite Sundays of the year is when the Primary does their program!  It always makes the day brighter!

I’m grateful for Primary music and words that can touch my heart so often….. like the other Primary song that the choir sang in today’s session of conference… “I’m Trying To Be Like Jesus”.  Though the arrangement wasn’t necessarily anything extremely ‘wow’…. the way it was sung with such reverence was breath taking!   Taking a Primary song and making it into an arrangement for adults to sing is something I love to hear and love to sing.  After all….. even though the music was written to instill wonderful things in children….we ALL need to have the messages instilled in us!

I am Grateful!  How are you?

I love conference weekend!  We are so blessed to live where we can listen to all the sessions so easily…. including being there live if we choose.  One of the amazing things about all this wonderful technology we have is that it can be used for people all over the world to stream conference live!  How awesome is that!

My favorite statement from the first session today was when Pres. Monson got up and looked around and said that when they were making the plans for the conference center they wondered if they would ever fill it… and then he said…. just look at it now!  It’s a HUGE place that holds thousands of people and it was packed full.

I’m always uplifted by the messages.  It makes me want to be a better person.  I wish I had the snippets from today’s talks that will be in the paper tomorrow to refer right now….. I’d love to be more specific with comments that were made….. but I enjoyed it all!

My favorite song of the day today????  When the Mo Tabs sang a beautiful arrangement of the Primary Song ‘I Know My Savior Loves Me”.  It’s a wonderful new song that the Primary learned last year for their program and I feel in love with it the first time I heard it!  I hope they make that arrangement available soon!

I”m looking forward to both sessions tomorrow.  I will feast on the words and the spirit!   Then I will get to watch the BYU Young Ambassador Alumni Fireside at 5:30 on BYUtv.  It was a blessing to be a part of that!  What a great way to top off conference!

What was your favorite part about conference?

Lita’s Selfless Service

I know I’ve blogged about service before….. but this time I’m getting particular.  My blog today is about a friend of mine who’s undying service is an inspiration to me!

We were invited to Lita’s house this evening to celebrate her 50th Birthday.  It’s a birthday that a lot of us don’t want to admit we’ve had….. myself included.  But nonetheless….. we’ve reached that age.  It was a nice, though short visit with Lita and Chuck.  In the process of this visit, we talked about some physical problems she is having right now…. problems that are causing her a lot of pain.  I started thinking after we left that she has probably earned those pains!

Lita and Chuck were blessed with 5 children….. two of which were special needs boys.  I should know enough to be able to tell you the name of the rare disease that both the boys had… but I don’t.  Honestly… to the best of my recollection it was something the doctors had never seen before and I think they named it after her oldest boy.  Without going into a lot of explanation…. let’s just say that the boys needed help with a lot of things.  Including things physical….. which meant that Lita did a lot of lifting and carrying of those boys for a long time!  Though the disease they had never let them grow very large in stature…. they were not slight in weight.  They never were able to verbally communicate…. in our language….. but they did it in their own language… which the family came to understand.  Wonderfully loving and sweet boys that were a joy to be around.

Chuck and Lita

Unfortunately, the disease took both of the boys at a fairly young age.  You’ve never seen a Mother mourn more for the loss of her children than Lita did.  Particularly when they lost the second boy.  Now what would she do with her time?  She had devoted her entire married life, up to that point, to taking care of these boys, as well as her 3 girls….  She felt lost and empty.  The only way she was able to pull herself out of the depression she was experiencing was to devote herself to helping others.  She’s had several jobs that require a lot of service to other children with problems.  Serving has been her whole life and remains one of the things that brings her joy….. until now.  With the pain she is struggling with, she has had to give up some of those things that mean so much to her.

Hopefully, there will be some relief for her physical pains soon and she can continue on with her selfless service which not only brings her joy…but blesses countless others lives!  Thanks for being such an inspiration Lita!  And Happy 50th!!
